The Website Utility Evaluation Version (3Mb ZIP file). If your website relies of
visitors from search engines and directories then it is vital that the web crawler robots
search engines use to gather information about your website are able to navigate the
website and extract information from its pages properly.
The Website Utility provides a web crawling robot view of the website which makes it
possible to assess whether the pages in the website contain sufficient content that will
be visible to search engines. Insufficient content on pages is usually a major issue for
websites that have not been built with search engines in mind.
The Website Utility is also able to report on the number of pages found in a website,
so that you can check that a web crawler is able to find all of the pages that you think
should be available through the website.
Interpreting the Report
The report shows the pages that were detected in the website that was crawled. Clicking
on the Web Robot View of URL link for each page shows additional details for each
page in the website. The report shows a number of properties for each page:
- Title: Each page in a website should ideally have a unique descriptive
title.
- Description: A short description of the page, derived from the page's description
meta tag. Including the description can enhance the display of website pages in certain
search engine search results pages.
- Keywords: Keywords associated with the page, derived from the page's keywords
meta tag. Hint: common mis-spellings of key words or phrases of relevance to the page can
be included in the keywords to assist users finding your web page.
- Robots meta tag: This meta tag can be used to restrict robot behaviour
on a website. The Website Utility can help to find instances of "robots"
"noindex" meta tags, which could prevent robots from successfully crawling all
or part of your website.
- Page content: The page's textual content visible to web crawling
robots. It is important to check that The Website Utility is able to extract most or all
of the text from your web pages, as most search engines need to be able to extract website
text in order to categorise and rank the website.
- Image alt tags: Text associated with images in the page
- Internal links: Links to other pages in the same website. Including
links between pages in the website improves navigation around the site for robots as well
as human visitors.
- External links: Links to other websites.
