ASP Kitchen : Book Shelf

ASP Kitchen Book Shelf Books I'm currently reading ASP.NET Developer's Cookbook The book contains around 250 recipes that show how to perform a variety of tasks in ASP.NET. It was written by members of the ASPAlliance , including myself. See my review of the ASP.NET Developer's Cookbook . Sams Teach Yourself ASP.NET in 21 Days Although I have spent a very happy four years creating web solutions with Classic ASP, it looks as if the time is right to take a look at ASP.NET. I was very surprised to see that a large number of ASP.NET books had already been released. After a considerable time spent browsing in the local book store, I decided on this book. This book contains a good introductory overview of ASP.NET, including a fairly in depth look at web forms, database connectivity and XML support. I now feel as though I have a basic understanding of the capabilities of ASP.NET, and I believe I am now in a better position to convert my existing sites to the .NET Framework. The other advantage to the book is that it has a copy of the Microsoft .NET Framework SDK Beta 2 on the accompanying CD, which saved having to spend hours downloading it from Microsoft's website. On the downside it barely mentions C# (with most of the examples being in VB.NET) and there are more typographical errors than I would care to mention. I presume these have been corrected in the latest edition though. Programming Distributed Applications with COM+ and Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Another purchase to help with the MCSD exams. I also wanted some in depth knowledge of COM, as an increasing number of web projects seem to be making use of it. This book goes very deep into the inner workings of COM. As a consequence, It's heavy going, but is well written enough to sustain reader interest. On the downside, much of this book will probably be obsolete once ASP.NET gains acceptance, but given that most of the projects I have worked on in the past year have been using Windows NT 4.0 as the platform of choice, I'd think that COM+ solutions developed with Visual Basic 6.0 will continue to be developed for some time to come. Useful MCSD books Web Applications With Microsoft Visual Interdev 6.0 : MCSD Training Kit for Exam 70-152 I've used Visual InterDev extensively for over two years, so exam 70-152 (Designing and Implementing Web Solutions with Microsoft Visual InterDev® 6.0) seemed the obvious choice for the MCSD's one elective exam.

Designing Relational Database Systems I purchased this book because I'd heard it was one of the best books to read in preparation for the MCSD 70-100 exam, Analyzing Requirements and Defining Solution Architectures (which I have now passed). I also felt that I needed to read up on some database theory in order to do better at the increasing amount of system design that was coming my way. Database theory can be daunting for those without Computer Science degrees, but luckily this book does not have the feel of an academic textbook. After reading it I feel that I have a much better appreciation of database theory.

MCSD Analyzing Requirements: Exam 70-100 (MCSD Study Guides) This book is a guide to the MCSD 70-100 exam, Analyzing Requirements and Defining Solution Architectures . The book is a useful overview to the topics covered in the exam. It is generally well written, although after reading it I still don't quite understand the different levels of database normalisation :-).

A useful feature of the book is that the final chapter contains a 50 question sample test. This can give you an indication as to whether you are ready for the real exam.

This book is also available as a bundle with the VB Desktop and Distributed applications Exam Cram books. MCSD Analyzing Requirements Study Guide (Exam 70-100) Another book to help with the MCSD 70-100 exam. With 656 pages and a CD-ROM, there is plenty of material to help with exam preparation. Topics covered by the book include understanding business requirements, design of solutions and the processes involved with software development.

The book also comes with a CD containing an HTML version of the book, as well as an HTML based multiple choice test based on the content of the book. I felt that the sample questions on the CD weren't strictly relevent to the actual exam (for example, the CD contains quite a number of questions on risk analysis).

This is generally a well written book. Like all the other MCSD books I have read though, it doesn't seem to be too closely related to the actual exam content. Still, it is a good overview of the subject, and would be of value to any developer who wants a basic understanding of the processes involved in software development.
