Home Investing Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) are a special type of savings account for anyone aged 18 and over and resident in the United Kingdom. Unlike ordinary savings account, the interest gained on ISAs is not taxed. There are two types of ISA: the Maxi ISA and the Mini ISA . Maxi ISA This has an investment limit of £7,000 in one financial year (i.e. from 1 April to 31 March the following year). You can only open or pay into a single Maxi ISA each financial year. The Maxi ISA can have a number of elements: Cash . It is possible to invest a maximum of £3,000 per year in the cash element of a Maxi ISA. Life Assurance. It is possible to invest a maximum of £1,000 per year in the life assurance element of a Maxi ISA. Stocks and shares. It is possible to invest up to £7,000 in stocks and shares within the Maxi ISA, although the amount invested in the stocks and shares, life assurance and cash elements must together not make up more than £7,000. Note that although the Maxi ISA has up to three elements, all three must be part of the same ISA from the same ISA provider. Mini ISA The Mini ISA can have one of two elements: Cash . It is possible to invest a maximum of £3,000 per year in the cash element of a Mini ISA. Stocks and Shares . It is possible to invest up to £4,000 in stocks and shares within the Mini ISA. Unlike the Maxi ISA, the investment limits of the Mini are fixed, so you can't invest more in stocks and shares if you don't make use of the cash element of the Mini ISA. The advantage of the Mini ISA though is that both the cash and stocks and shares elements can be purchased from different ISA providers, so the cash element of the Mini ISA could be purchased from a building society, and the stocks and shares element of the Mini ISA from a discount broker or fund supermarket.
