Home Tropical Fish Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta Splendens) This is my latest livestock addition to my tropical fish tank. As I didn't have room for many more fish I decided to get a single male Siamese Fighting Fish. This fish spends most of its time swimming around the top third of the tank. The livestock in my tank now have their own space: Kuhli Loaches spend most of their time on the bottom, and the Neon Tetras mostly swim in the middle of the tank. As he is significantly larger and generally slower moving than the other fish, he is much easier to photograph: Unlike the other fish in the tank, the Siamese Fighting Fish is able to breathe air, and frequently makes trips to the top of the tank. He also seems moderately more aware of humans than the other fish. Feeding The Siamese Fighting Fish appears to eat any food offered, although it prefers to feed at the top of the tank. Occassionally it will take food from the bottom of the tank. It is a slower feeder the smaller fish such as Neon Tetras, so care should be taken that the smaller fish don't take all the food! As far as type of food is concerned, the Siamese Fighting Fish enjoys frozen bloodworm or brine shrimps. Like most Siamese Fighting Fish it hasn't been raised on flake food, so it doesn't eat it. It is apparently possible to train them to eat flake food, but I haven't been able to do that with my fish. Other Observations When resting, the Siamese Fighting Fish likes to rest on plants. I have real plants in the aquarium, although artificial plants are probably OK. Site Map All content is © 1995 - 2006 Brett Burridge |
